From Push Mower to Powerhouse:
The Design One Story
When Design One first sprouted in 1999, it was just Trey Bohannan, a beat-up push mower, and a whole lot of grit. Mowing lawns in Pine Bluff with a temperamental weedeater and a leaf blower that sometimes cooperated, Trey's determination and knack for getting things done quickly ignited a spark. That spark soon became a flame when Design One landed its first commercial mowing contract: Wendy's! (A client they're proud to still serve today.)
The Wendy's contract meant it was time for an upgrade. Enter the first zero-turn mower, a machine so impressive that people would pull into the parking lot just to watch it in action. Growth demanded help, and within months, Trey hired his first employee. Things were rolling.
More commercial accounts followed, and a pivotal moment arrived when a major contractor entrusted Design One with five landscaping jobs. With a newly acquired contractor's license and a taste for commercial work, Design One was ready to level up. A shop was purchased, a second mowing crew formed, and landscaping and irrigation services became a regular part of the business. The company was growing rapidly.
Then came February 2020, a game-changer. Design One acquired Roy D. Smith Construction, moving to a sprawling 80+ acre campus complete with shops, land, a menagerie of four dogs, a cat, a stuffed bear, and even Roy himself! This acquisition transformed Design One, propelling them to become one of the largest trucking companies in the area. They now move aggregates and materials for their own projects and for other companies and individuals daily and even operate the only full-time dirt pit in the county.
Today, Design One boasts a fleet of equipment & trucks of all shapes and sizes, along with bulldozers, trackhoes, rollers, water trucks, tractors, and just about any piece of heavy equipment imaginable. A full-time office staff manages everything from billing to GPS modeling data for complex excavation projects. While much has changed since those early days, Design One remains at its core a small, family-oriented business, rooted in the same spirit of hard work and dedication that started it all with a push mower and a prayer.
